A Short History of Holes

16 April – 31 July 2016

Sculptor Vera Lossau stages a location-specific installation at the MAKK. Using the title A Short History of Holes, the 2014 winner of the Frauenkulturpreis für bildende Künste (Women’s Culture Award for Visual Arts) by the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn addresses the question as to what a hole, an ornament and a loop have in common. The exhibition consists of two parts, one of which is shown at the LVR Industriemuseum in Oberhausen, the other one at the MAKK. For the latter, the artist took inspiration from the multi-facetted and richly decorated exhibits in the museum’s permanent collections: the ornaments featured in these exhibits provide hundreds of variations on repeating structures and interspaces. A Short History of Holes represents Vera Lossau’s approach to decoding these patterns and transforming them into a single sculptural form.
